The Pakistan Wolf Project evolved from a 2025 pilot project led by our core research team and key collaborators. Our objectives are to research gray wolves in Pakistan, create awareness for wolf conservation, and support research primarily led and conducted by scientists and researchers in Pakistan.
Currently, our research focuses on the Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) - the oldest wolf lineage in the world, and classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Our organization also researches other sympatric species, using camera traps to document species diversity and diet studies of sympatric carnivores, like golden jackals and red foxes. The main habitats covered by our research are grasslands, arid shrublands, and arid mountainous regions of Southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.

Our project combines field research, genetics, and public outreach to build the scientific foundation needed for wolf conservation in Pakistan.
A central goal is to clarify the distribution of the Indian wolf (C. l. pallipes), following recent findings that Pakistan is a global hotspot for wolf diversity, to create awareness for wolf conservation, and support research that is led and conducted by Pakistani scientists. To achieve this, we:
Document wolf presence using camera traps, sign surveys, and field observations to confirm where wolves are surviving in Southern Pakistan, and which species they share the landscape with.
Collect non-invasive genetic samples to clarify the lineage thes wolves belong to and DNA test for prey species to understand diet
Record Human-Wildlife conflict, document instacnces of livestock depredation and community perceptions towards wolves and other wildlife
Build up local conservation capacity by working with the provincial wildlife department, rangers, field staff, and biology students as the project develops the need for more lab work
