Our project focuses on non-invasive sampling methods for sample collection and various lab tools to study genetics and diet.
How do we conduct our research?
Wolves have huge home ranges and can travel over 50km in a single day. In Pakistan, Indian wolves share habitat with free-ranging dogs that are roughly the same size, and leave behind similar footprints and scats. As a result, detecting wolves and tracking their movement is a challenging task.
We rely on local reports and camera traps to identify areas of wolf activity, and use genetic tools to extract and sequence fragments of DNA recovered from scats, hairs, and tissue samples to confirm that the samples collected are from wolves. We also search for specific genetic markers of the Indian wolf lineage to identify evolutionarily significant populations of high conservation priority.
