Wildlife genetics can teach us about the health and connectivity of wildlife populations. By studying genetics over large landscapes, we can identify priority areas and evolutionarily significant populations. This helps build informed conservation policies and species recovery plans by establishing a baseline and defining measurable outcomes.
The Pakistan Wolf Project is studying the evolutionary history of wolves in Pakistan and building scientific capacity for further genetic research. Dr. Hira Fatima and Dr. Rubab Naqvi each run labs with their own students at their respective institutions in Pakistan. With their combined expertise and support from Dr. Lauren Hennelly's Genetics Lab at Rice University in Houston, TX, the team is building a repository of DNA samples extracted from hair, tissue, and fecal samples to conduct genetic research.
The above figure was constructed by analysing genomes of wolves from 11 different countries. Figure A shows ancestry of various individual wolves, with colours representing distinct lineages. Figure C shows connectivity of populations and gene flow. Both figures show barriers to gene flow in Pakistan, implying it is an important place for understanding wolf evolution
